Recorded ca. November 3, 1926 as per Brian Rust's Jazz and Ragtime Records, but more than one source -- including Discogs -- places the date of release in 1927, so we'll go with that. This was a well-travelled and apparently very popular Plaza side; in addition to this Puritan it was circulated on Broadway, Paramount, Banner, Domino (twice), Regal, Silvertone, Apex and numerous European imprints. It was even reissued on a John R.T. Davies LP devoted to hot sides from small labels in the 80s. It's easy to see why; the piece is unusually spicy for a dime store dance record, highly energetic and loose in the ensemble playing. "Ralph Sherman" is a record company pseudonym; this is the band of Al Lentz, who sings the vocal chorus as "Carl Mills" and is now more or less totally forgotten. Some of the men are known, but published personnells tend to differ on the details. "Deed I Do" is now a well established jazz standard, but it was brand new in 1926. Some sources relate that Johnny Marvin was the first to record it, for Edison, but that wasn't made until January 1927 which is even after the version Marvin cut for Victor (12-17-1926). So this recording might actually be the first of "Deed I Do." This side is not acoustic, but a very weak electrical.
